My name is Nekohl Johnson; I am an Army Veteran and a facilitator for the Southside Strong Coalition for Suicide Prevention at the Pullman Blue Door. This year was especially a challenge for me because of many stressors my mental health spiraled in a direction that I didn't know how I would be able to recover from. Still, by God's grace and through the help of The Jesse Brown VA Day Hospital Program, I am here and recovering today.
As a facilitator, I was ready to give up on my ambition to help others dealing with Mental Health challenges including suicide, until a Marine Veteran visited the SSC Veterans Coffee Chat at the Blue Door Pullman.
Upon entering the facility, the young man buckled. He expressed his gratitude for the open doors, and that someone was present. He described being at the end and contemplating suicide. But because we were present and able to provide immediate resources, he is still here and present working towards living his best life.
I remain faithful to this endeavor: one day, one veteran; each reaches one. My strategy and advice is, "Don't give up."
